Facilitation notes, evidence prompts, and extension ideas for the population-change pack.

Teacher Notes

Population change teacher notes

These notes support facilitation of the first population-change pack and help keep the work centered on comparison, evidence, and revision rather than on interface use alone.

Facilitation Notes

Open with one mechanism

Do not begin by changing everything. Start with one force or one landscape change, then compare runs carefully.

Push evidence talk

Ask what in the run supports the claim and what alternate explanation still needs to be considered.

Use revision explicitly

When students revise an explanation after a conflicting run, treat that as success rather than as failure.

What To Listen For

Strong responses

  • Clear separation of observation from interpretation.
  • Claims tied to specific run evidence.
  • Recognition that chance and spatial structure can both matter.

Common problems

  • Jumping from one run to a settled conclusion.
  • Treating drift as if it were a deterministic force.
  • Ignoring alternate explanations after seeing one plausible story.
